PRE-SERVICE WORKSHOP 2006
January 7, 2006 through January 12, 2006
University of Puerto Rico – Mayagüez, Puerto Rico
STP/LWS Our Star the Sun Pre-Service Institute is promoting effective science, technology, engineering, and mathematics teaching and learning with an emphasis on strengthening core subject areas related to the Sun-Earth connection (SEC) theme in its yearly program. The Pre-Service Institute seeks to support comprehensive K–12 strategies that result in long–term, sustained impact on the science skills, as well as participation of under–represented and underserved communities in NASA science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The Pre-Service Institute uses the Western part of Puerto Rico in its workshops programming as the ideal location for the different areas of habitats and organisms, meteorology, ecology, oceanography and coastal processes that exist within easy reach in order to promote an enhanced awareness and understanding of the Sun and its effects in society.
The Pre-Service Institute objectives are to:
- Increase content knowledge for K-12 teachers using an integrated format based around STP/LWS missions science, technology, engineering, math related to heliophysics science;
- Increase K-12 teacher awareness and use of available NASA educational resources concentrating on STP and LWS Programs missions;
- Promote cultural awareness among educator collaborative teams to improve school science and engineering education to increase NASA careers pipeline.
