NASA SOLAR SCHOOLS
The connection between Space & Earth science is playing a prominent role in society and the
21st Century. It is a way of looking ahead, building on a solid past and
working together to overcome the challenges of tomorrow.
NASA Solar Schools Initiative focuses on space weather, solar system, earth & space science, technology and engineering, environmental science, heliophysics, and mathematics in school.
The program is particularly addressing the topics of climate change, earth's upper atmosphere, energy, solar winds, CME's, greenhouse effect, magnetism, hydrogen, hydropower and radiation to name a few.
The Solar Schools mission is aimed at improving knowledge about earth and space science connection among the Pre-K to 12 communities, educators and the general public.
Solar School teachers' participation in the program will begin with a one (elementary) or three-day (middle and high school) program held at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. The Center is home to the Nation's largest organization of combined scientists and engineers dedicated to learning and sharing their knowledge of the Earth, Solar System, and Universe. Goddard Space Flight Center is engaged in developing and operating scientific spacecraft. Each teacher and 30 students will spend 1-3 day immersion in heliophysics science activities. The activities are standards-based and designed to give students an understanding of the methods used by Goddard scientists, engineers, and technicians to develop and operate scientific spacecraft. The STP/LWS staff will organize the workshop with lectures, activities and a project to complete upon the students return to their home institutions.
If you want to become a Solar School and you are outside of the Washington Metropolitan area or if you are in the Washington Metropolitan area, please contact: Dr Evelina Félicité-Maurice at Evelina.Felicite-Mauric-1@nasa.gov.
